German Carbon Transport Grid (GCTG) project
The German Carbon Transport Grid (GCTG) is a forward-looking infrastructure project that serves as an umbrella project for our WHVCC, DRC, NSCC, DKCC and Cluster Elbe projects and makes a significant contribution to achieving European climate neutrality goals. The aim of the project is to establish a high-performance and flexible CO₂ transport network in the heart of Europe that connects industrial emitters with suitable storage sites and users, thus enabling the large-scale capture, transport and permanent storage or binding of carbon dioxide in products. Through a robust pipeline system with cross-border connections, the GCTG supports Germany and its neighbouring countries in decarbonising industrial sectors and promotes European cooperation.
The GCTG closes the infrastructure gap between European inland emitters and storage options and users, connects industrial clusters with CO₂ sinks and ensures seamless integration into a future pan-European system. In the first 25 years of operation, up to 939 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions can be avoided, almost 1 gigatonne of CO₂. Once all expansion stages have been completed, the network will have a transport capacity of approximately 120 million tonnes of CO₂ per year. The project thus makes an important contribution to the implementation of the European Green Deal, climate neutrality and net negative emission targets.
Transport will be via a transnational pipeline network in dense phase, i.e. under high pressure. The infrastructure will be newly built and, where possible, existing infrastructure corridors will be used.
By providing a reliable and cost-effective transport solution for captured CO₂, investments in carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) will be facilitated and innovation promoted. The infrastructure is fully electrified, increasingly powered by renewables and designed to be flexible for future technological developments. The GCTG thus strengthens Europe's technological leadership and lays the foundation for a sustainable and interconnected CO₂ market.
